Quarter Deck
The quarterdeck is the "command center" of the ship. It is the station of the watch officer, whether that be the captain or one of the lieutenants while the captain is resting, the helmsman, and the one raising or lowering signal flags.

- Mainmast
- Foremast

- Skylight for Captain's day cabin
- Rutter, 30'×6'×3.5'
- Helm - a double-wheeled helm that permits up to four men to steer the ship. There are also two binnacles just forward of the helm, on on each side, that contains the ship's compasses.

Main Deck
The main deck is the highest deck that runs the length of the entire ship. Everything forward of the quarterdeck is open to the air, while the quarterdeck is the roof of the cabins at the aft of the main deck. Each of the aft cabins has its own head, which is little more than a small seat with a hole cut in it that leads down to a common horizontal channel on each side of the hull. One tube serves the port-side cabins while another serves the starboard-side cabins. The tube lets out at the aft end into the sea behind the ship, and is regularly flushed with seawater.

- Captain's Wardroom - where the Captain and the other personnel quartered on this deck may meet or dine together.
- Captain's Day Cabin - the office where the captain does his work when not on the quarterdeck.
- Captain's Cabin - where the captain sleeps.
- Admiral's Cabin - where an admiral or mission commander (if not the captain) sleeps. If the ship has no admiral or mission commander assigned, then this would be guest quarters for visiting senior officers. On this expedition, Lord Alax Tallman and wives occupy this cabin.
- Cabin - On this expedition, Princess Astra and her husband Sir Raymond are quartered here.

- Anchor Capstan - a double capstan that may be worked from either or both the main deck and the gun deck.
- Gig, 25'×5'×3.0'
- Main Hatch - normally covered by gratings to allow fresh air and light below decks. The latticework can easily be removed so the crew, using yardarms as crane hoists, can move supplies to and from belowdecks. When the gratings are in place this is also the resting place of the pinnace.
- Pinnace, 35'×7'×3.5'
- Jollyboat, 20'×5'×2.5'
- Galley Smokestasck.
- Head (for landlubbers, that's the lavatory or garderobe). There is no waste storage; one's bodily wastes fall directly into the sea.
- Catheads - crane booms for hoising anchors to the rail.

Gun Deck
The gun deck is where most of the guns are placed. The two bow chaser guns also have secondary gunports on each side of the ship as indicated by the gray outline. These guns are normally kept in their forward mountings, but if desired they can be swung around to add one gun to each broadside.
Many of the gunners are also quartered on this deck. There are posts between the guns on which hammocks may be hung. Up to 100 of the crew can sleep here when the ship is not cleared for action.
- Mizzenmast
- Mainmast
- Foremast
- Bowsprit
- Anchor Capstan - a double capstan that may be worked from either or both the main deck and the gun deck.
- Bilge Pumps - double plunger pumps - the downstroke of one plunger corresponds to the upstroke of the other plunger. There are three sets of pumps, two of which have two pairs of plunger cylinders.
|
- Hatch - normally covered by gratings to allow fresh and light below decks, but the gratings can easily be removed to facilitate the movement of cargo belowdecks.
- Hawse Pipes - anchor cables run through these so they may be stored on the orlop deck.
- Galley - a wood-burning stove that some call a camboose on which hot food is prepared for the crew. This is the only place on board where open fire is permitted. The aft section of the stove can be used to roast meat, and it may also serve as the armorer's forge.
- Hawse Holes - anchor cables exit the ship though holes in the bow hull. These holes may be sealed when the anchors are secured to the catheads above.

Berth Deck
The berth deck is where most of the crew is quartered and sleeps.
- Mizzenmast
- Mainmast
- Foremast
- Wardroom - the common dining area for the ship's lieutenants, midshipmen, and warrant officers. Along the ceiling run cables that connect the helm to the tiller.
- Tiller Toom - the tiller changes the angle of the rudder, and is connected to the helm by block and tackle.
- Officer's Head - the "facilities" for lieutenants, midshipmen and warrant officers. There is no waste storage; human waste falls directly into the sea at the ship's stern.

- Enlisted Berthing Area - this area is filled with rows of posts to which hammocks are tied two-high. A crewman is allowed a 8'×4' space, which allows approximately 230 to sleep in the enlisted berthing area at a time. The crew messes on berth deck, eating picnic-fashion in small groups from a common pot for that group. Each group, or "mess", consists of 8-10 crew. One person of each mess is designated to retrieve chow from the galley.
- Bilge Pump Cylinders
- Hatch - normally covered by gratings to allow fresh and light below decks, but the gratings can easily be removed to facilitate the movement of cargo belowdecks.
- Hawse Pipes - anchor cables run through these so they may be stored on the orlop deck.
- Sickbay - this is not the actual surgical space the ship's surgeon works in, but more a recuperation area for wounded and sick patients after surgery is performed.

Orlop Deck
- Mizzenmast
- Mainmast
- Foremast
- Bread Room - Storage area for bread and other of the more perishable foodstuffs.
- Port Aft Magazine - where kegs of powder are kept, only accessible from the filling room. The compartment is sheathed in lead or copper to prevent sparks from igniting or vermin from getting in and gnawing on the powder kegs.
- Port Aft Filling Room - From here, cartridges are filled with powder and passed to powder monkeys who will carry the cartridges up to the guns. Marines guard the entrance at all times, and access may be gained only on the Captain's orders.
- Starboard Aft Magazine - where kegs of powder are kept, only accessible from the filling room. The compartment is sheathed in lead or copper to prevent sparks from igniting or vermin from getting in and gnawing on the powder kegs.

- Surgeon's Cockpit - this is the actual operating area where the ship's surgeon tends to the wounded. The cockpit is relatively stable due to its being low and aft, thus allows the surgeon to work with the least disturbance.
- Surgeons' & Surgeon's Mates' Stores - Surgical and medicinal equipment and supplies are kept here.

MISCELLANEOUS NOTES
The Avanguard was primarily built by the shipwrights of House Dauntinghorn and paid for directly from the Obarskyr family's wealth, so no Crown monies or tax increases were required. Thus the ship is the personal property of the Royal House of Obarskyr, although the ship is nominally part of the Imperial Navy and is crewed by Blue Dragons.
The ship has a two-foot thick hull in most places, although the aft of the upper decks has a slightly thinner hull. Most of the wood of the hull is oak, but the masts themselves are made of duskwood. Building the ship required the felling of 7,200 trees, which would be equivalent to approximately 120 acres of forest if clear-cut. No clear-cutting was permitted, though, so a larger number of acres were slightly thinned under the direction of rangers, and two saplings were planted for every tree felled to preserve the forest.
